Online Sync

Online Sync

If you need to be able to manage huge amounts of data and have files that need to be accessible from anywhere, any time, then there is actually no longer a need to carry around flash drives or portable hard drives. More and more, people are beginning to store their information online, as it is easier to create an online sync and store unlimited amounts of data that can be accessed easily.

The concept of online sync

The concept behind this is very simple. We all have lots of data in the form of individual files and folders that we store on our computers. There are times when we will need to access this information, or even share this information with others. Traditionally, this meant storing the relevant files on flash drives or portable hard drives, which we would then link to various computers at hand, in order to access the information.

Now, however, as more providers grant access to storage online, being able to use online sync means that as long as there is internet access, you will be able to access the files. The first step of course is to ensure that you have uploaded all these files into an online sync platform.

Basic information about online sync

When we talk about online syncing, this means storing all your data in a virtual drive that is connected to your online storage space. It then does not matter which device you use to access this information. It will be easily accessible as long as you have internet access. There are several advantages to using such a service including:

  • There is usually no limit to the number of files or folders that can be stored online
  • Almost all providers of this service provide free storage up to a certain minimum, and in the event that you need greater storage, the costs are minimal
  • Most of the providers of this service provide it for free
  • It is possible to store every type of file conceivable
  • You no longer need to carry around portable storage devices
  • You will be able to save space on your computer hard disk, and this will in turn allow your computer to work faster and at its optimum
  • Your information is secure as access is usually via username and password
  • It is possible to selectively grant people access to specific files or folders on a needs basis

Before deciding which one of these online sync accounts to use or platforms to sign up for, ensure that these platforms provide direct syncing access. Also check the amount of free storage that is given. The more established providers tend to be more generous before requiring you to upgrade to a paid account.

Whilst it is perfectly acceptable to store every file or folder you have online, as a personal security feature, always store these separately on your own portable hard drive too. Whilst there is no need to lug this anywhere, it merely provides the option of storage in case anything happens to the server that you use for online sync. In addition, remember that whilst your account on these online sync providers is usually secure, remember to keep very confidential documents off such services, just in case.
